The Jazz of Life
The Wonder of Music in Theological Perspective

Art Talks!

May 11-12, 2001
Dr. Jeremy Begbie
Dr. Jeremy Begbie is Associate Principal of Ridley Hall, Cambridge and Reader in Theology at the University of St. Andrews, where he is also Director of "Theology Through the Arts", a research project exploring the relevance of art and music for theology. He is a classically trained musician and has performed extensively as a pianist, oboist and conductor. He is author of Music in God's Purposes, Voicing Creation's Praise: Towards a Theology of the Arts and Theology, Music and Time.

Does Music Talk? Music and Word in Theological Perspective

Friday May 11, 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
St. James Cathedral
65 Church Street (at King)
Toronto, Ontario

In this multimedia performance-lecture, Jeremy Begbie will explore how musical phenomena such as rhythm, metre, resolution, repetition, and improvisation can open up some of the central themes of the Christian faith. In doing so, he shows that music can not only refresh theology with new models, but also release it from damaging habits of thought which have hampered its work in the past.

Theology, Music and Time

Saturday, May 12, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm
Trinity College, Combination Room
6 Hoskin Avenue (between Queen's Park Crescent and St. George)
Toronto, Ontario

Join us for a symposium and panel discussion based on Jeremy Begbie's new book, Theology Music and Time. The book aims to "show how music can enrich and advance theology, extending our wisdom about God and God's ways with the world." Its primary question is not "what can theology do for music?" but "what can music do for theology?" Jeremy Begbie argues, "music's engagement with time gives the theologian invaluable resources for understanding how it is that God enables us to live peaceably with time as a dimension of the created world."

This event is sponsored by the Institute for Christian Studies' Art Talks! The Ruth Memorial Series on the Arts and Culture, in cooperation with the Imago Arts Foundation
