Religion and the Age of "Patriot" Revolutions: Rethinking the 18th Century
Dale K. Van Kley, Professor of History at Ohio State University, is a
distinguished scholar of early modern Europe and of the French
Revolution. He is the author of several works, including The Religious
Origins of the French Revolution: from Calvin to the Civil Constitution,
1560-1791 (Yale University Press, 1996), editor of The French Idea of
Freedom: the Old Regime and the Declaration of Rights of 1789 (Stanford
University Press, 1994) and co-editor (with James E. Bradley) of Religion
and Politics in Enlightenment Europe (University of Notre Dame Press,
2001).
Professor Van Kley’s work argues that religion, including its divisions, its
discourse and its desires, so permeated and shaped the Enlightenment in
general and French Revolution in particular, that political history cannot be
understood without attending to its formative role.
